BioLargo Inc. (BLGO:OTCQX) announced that its patented Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator (AEC) has processed more than 2 million gallons of PFAS-contaminated water after more than six months of continuous commercial operation at the municipal drinking water facility in Lake Stockholm, New Jersey, according to an August 3 release.
The installation, which began operating in January 2026, now serves as a commercial demonstration site where prospective customers can evaluate the technology firsthand.
Since its installation, the AEC system has consistently reduced PFAS concentrations in Lake Stockholm's drinking water to levels below all applicable New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) standards and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant limits. BioLargo said the system's proprietary collection process also generates substantially less contaminated waste than traditional carbon filtration systems, helping lower the municipality's hazardous waste disposal costs.
The company noted that both the NJDEP and the U.S. EPA continue to oversee and evaluate the AEC system through a 12-month monitoring program designed to verify that the technology consistently meets or exceeds regulatory standards.
"With our system running for more than six months now, having removed PFAS chemicals from over 2 million gallons of drinking water, the Lake Stockholm installation gives our potential customers and their engineers a working installation to confirm both AEC's effectiveness and operational cost savings. The question is no longer 'does it work,' but rather 'where and how quickly' the AEC can be deployed next," said BioLargo President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis P. Calvert.
What Are 'Forever Chemicals'?
Commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are built around one of the strongest bonds in organic chemistry, the carbon-fluorine bond. According to the release, engineers prized it for making non-stick pans, waterproof jackets, and grease-resistant food wrappers.
"But that same indestructibility means these chemicals never break down — not in a landfill, not in a river, and not inside human beings," the company said in the release. "Once PFAS enter your bloodstream, they lodge in organs, blood, and bones. Some of these compounds can persist in the human body for years per exposure, meaning every glass of contaminated water, every use of certain consumer products, adds to a body burden that never fully resets."
The company said research has linked PFAS exposure to a range of health concerns, including certain cancers, weakened immune function, thyroid disorders, and developmental harm in children. Because PFAS contamination is widespread and detectable in the blood of most Americans who have been tested, BioLargo said the issue extends far beyond communities located near chemical manufacturing facilities. It also cited an August 2024 estimate from the American Water Works Association that projected utilities would spend between US$385,000 and US$500,000 annually per drinking water entry point to comply with U.S. EPA regulations governing maximum allowable PFAS levels.
BioLargo said conventional treatment methods, including granular activated carbon and ion exchange systems, often have difficulty capturing short-chain PFAS compounds, require ongoing replacement of filter media, and generate significant volumes of contaminated spent media and brine that must be disposed of through hazardous waste landfills or incineration, which can create additional environmental concerns.
By comparison, BioLargo said its AEC technology eliminates the need for granular activated carbon or single-use ion exchange resins while producing only a small volume of concentrated residual waste. At the Lake Stockholm facility, BioLargo said the system has lowered operating costs compared with what the municipality would have incurred using conventional granular activated carbon treatment.
"Utility engineers and regulators want to see a real municipal installation under third-party monitoring before they move to adopt a new technology. Lake Stockholm gives us that for the AEC," said BioLargo Equipment Solutions & Technologies President Tonya Chandler.
Beyond municipal drinking water, BioLargo said it believes the Lake Stockholm project highlights broader commercial opportunities for the AEC technology in treating industrial wastewater, landfill leachate, and contaminated groundwater. The company said it continues to conduct bench-scale pilot projects with prospective municipal and industrial customers while expanding commercialization efforts, including its recently announced memorandum of understanding with global water treatment company Aquatech.
"Lake Stockholm is the launch pad for our strategy with Aquatech. Together we intend to pair the AEC with their PFAS treatment and destruction capabilities and extend it beyond municipal drinking water to more of the PFAS challenges customers face," said Calvert.
BioLargo added that testing at the Lake Stockholm facility will continue under the U.S. EPA monitoring program, and the company plans to release additional third-party performance data as it becomes available.
Wound Care Platform's Flagship Product Shows Promise, Co. Says
Another BioLargo company, Clyra Medical Technologies, is advancing a wound care platform centered on its patented Copper-Iodine Complex Solution (CICS), which it markets under the Clyrasept brand. Its flagship product, ViaCLYR, has received FDA 510(k) clearance as a wound irrigation solution for cleansing, irrigating, and debriding dermal wounds and burns, as well as moistening and lubricating absorbent wound dressings. The clearance covers a broad range of wound types, including burns, pressure ulcers, diabetic and stasis ulcers, post-surgical wounds, and abrasions.
The company said ViaCLYR differs from conventional antiseptics through what it describes as a "chemistry on demand" approach. Rather than releasing a high concentration of antiseptic immediately, the solution maintains a reservoir of approximately 250 parts per million of iodine potential and gradually releases small amounts of free iodine as microbes are encountered. According to Clyra's in vitro technical data, the solution continued to neutralize repeated bacterial challenges introduced over a 72-hour period without replenishment, supporting the antimicrobial persistence of the preservative in solution.
Laboratory testing cited by the company found that ViaCLYR neutralized 19 bacterial and fungal organisms, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Candida auris, within one minute. Clyra also said comparative cytotoxicity testing showed the product did not damage healthy dermal cells, unlike several commonly used wound care antiseptics, including Dakin's solution, chlorhexidine gluconate, hydrogen peroxide, and povidone iodine.
The company emphasized that these laboratory findings relate to the preservative's antimicrobial activity in vitro and are not included in ViaCLYR's FDA-cleared indications. The FDA clearance does not authorize claims that the product eliminates pathogens in wounds or treats or prevents infection. Clyra said it believes the combination of broad antimicrobial activity, prolonged performance, lack of observed cytotoxicity, no reported resistance, and no requirement for rinsing addresses a longstanding need in wound care.
Clyra Chief Executive Officer Steve Harrison described the product's potential advantages by recalling a discussion with a prominent burn surgeon, who told him a competing product "lasts about two minutes," requiring more frequent dressing changes. Harrison said, "More labor, more cost, more time, more pain and suffering to make (the) product work. We're not asking any of that... a product that doesn't need to generate more dressing changes, more suffering, more pain, more crying, more bleeding, and more cost and expense."
According to Harrison, the product's efficiency could also help hospitals operating under financial constraints by reducing the burden on clinical staff and allowing physicians and nurses to care for more patients. He added that Clyra is currently negotiating pricing agreements with several large U.S. health systems, supported by strong interest from physicians.
Analyst Likes Company's Strategy
1Technical Analyst John Newell of John Newell & Associates highlighted BioLargo's healthcare progress through its majority-owned subsidiary, Clyra Medical Technologies, in a March 11 report for Streetwise Reports. Newell said BioLargo has followed a methodical approach by extensively validating its proprietary technologies through scientific research before partnering with established organizations to broaden commercialization. He noted that the company's technology portfolio extends across water treatment, environmental cleanup, air quality, energy storage, and medical technologies.
According to Newell, Clyra ranks among BioLargo's most significant healthcare assets because its copper-iodine antimicrobial technology provides up to 72 hours of antimicrobial activity while remaining non-cytotoxic, making it suitable for wound care and infection control applications. He also pointed to ViaCLYR's FDA 510(k) clearance, which enables distribution through established medical device sales channels, and said the platform is supported by about 40 issued and pending patents covering products in liquid, powder, hydrogel, and antimicrobial dressing formats.
Based on the prospects for BioLargo's various technology platforms, Newell assigned the company a Speculative Buy rating. He said BioLargo's measured commercialization strategy, combined with its focus on strategic partnerships, positions the company to capitalize on increasing demand for advanced healthcare technologies and sustainable energy storage products.
In a May 18 report, Oak Ridge Financial Analyst Richard Ryan characterized BioLargo's operating strategy as a "hub and spoke format invent/acquire a product, prototype/prove it out, partner with necessary third parties, and commercialize." Ryan reiterated his Buy rating, saying BioLargo's practice of commercializing technologies through separate operating subsidiaries diversifies risk while allowing the company to maintain meaningful ownership stakes in businesses targeting multiple high-growth markets.
The Catalyst: Millions Could Be Affected?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) said its latest PFAS contamination map identifies 9,728 confirmed sites with detectable levels of the so-called "forever chemicals" across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories. The nonprofit said updated data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found PFAS in 3,539 public water systems, bringing the total number of known contaminated locations to 9,728. According to EWG, the findings indicate that about 176 million people live in communities where drinking water has tested positive for PFAS, although the group said the true extent of contamination is likely greater because current federal reporting thresholds are higher than those used in earlier research.
According to Grand View Research in June, the global PFAS treatment market size was estimated at US$2.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from US$3 billion in 2026 to US$4.8 billion by 2033, at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2026 to 2033. North America held the largest revenue share of 41.9% in 2025.
The growth of the PFAS treatment market is being strongly driven by the growing implementation of stringent environmental regulations and water quality standards across developed and emerging economies, the report said.

The report attributed the market's growth to rising rates of chronic diseases, traumatic injuries, burns, and the healthcare demands of an aging population. As healthcare providers, insurers, and manufacturers work to improve patient outcomes while managing long-term costs, wound care has become an increasingly important focus across hospitals, clinics, home healthcare, and long-term care facilities.
The report said demand for wound care products continues to climb as cases of chronic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers, surgical wounds, and trauma-related injuries increase. It notes that delayed wound healing can lead to higher hospitalization costs, greater use of healthcare resources, and increased readmissions, making effective wound management not only a clinical concern but also a financial and operational priority for healthcare organizations.
